Help us find a new practice space!
Odaiko New England is a Boston based taiko organization that has operated for over 30 years. Through our performances, classes, and workshops, we aim to make taiko a familiar art form to American audiences and encourage a greater appreciation and understanding of Asian American cultures. We believe taiko has the power to bring people together in harmony and community. In the spirit of kumidaiko (ensemble drumming), we strive to drum as ONE voice.
Elaine Fong - 1995
Odaiko New England (ONE) was initially formed in 1994 by Elaine Fong, a former member of Soh Daiko from New York City. While moving to Boston, Elaine looked to continue the art form of taiko within New England by forming ONE.
Now as an established non-profit performing arts group, we aim to bring communities together through the power of our performances, workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and classes.
Taiko drums have a rich and ancient history. Some of taiko's earliest uses were in Shinto and Buddhist rituals, cultural matsuri festivals, and even used to provide supporting soundscapes in Japanese kabuki or noh theater.
Today in North America, the most common form of taiko drumming is known as "kumidaiko," or "ensemble drumming." This form of taiko brings many different taiko drums to the stage for a lively performance and has only existed since the 1950s when Daihachi Oguchi, a Japanese drummer who was studying American jazz music, had the idea to bring many different taiko drums to the stage all at once.
Since the 1950s, there have been an explosion of kumidaiko groups all over the world. As a relatively young art form, taiko is continuously evolving. Odaiko New England has established itself as a center where our own style of taiko drumming forms, taking influences from a mixture of different cultures.

If you are an experienced taiko player and interested in becoming part of our performing ensemble, we have an apprenticeship program which is a great way for you to begin getting to know the members, learn our repertoire, and tour with us on our gigs. During apprenticeship you will learn Odaiko New England's taiko style and we will get to know if you are a good fit for our ensemble.
Apprenticeship is by invitation only. The best way to be invited is to begin attending one of our classes. For more info on apprenticeship and our courses, contact juni@onetaiko.net
