Learn Taiko

Odaiko New England offers introductory workshops and multi week classes for learning taiko. Each class covers different material, so check back often to see what is offered. In these classes, you will learn how to strike the drum with confidence, power, and grace. Taiko drumming combines dynamic movement and rhythmic drumming, so prepare to exercise both your body and your mind!

Come Prepared

• • • Wear comfortable athletic clothing which allow for easy unrestricted movement of your arms and legs.

    • Bring ear protection. Either earplugs or ear muffs will work.

    • Have a bottle of water with you.

    • A pen and notebook can be helpful to jot down notes.

    • Bring your taiko spirit!

For beginner level workshops and classes, bachi (taiko drumsticks) will be provided for use. After the first month of classes, students will be expected to have their own bachi. If you would like to purchase chu-daiko bachi ( drumsticks for regular taiko drums ), Odaiko New England has a stock of these for sale. Any other types of specialty bachi should be purchased from taiko online stores such as Asano Taiko US or Kadon.

Our practices are held at the Regent Underground Theatre in Arlington, MA. To get there, look for the main entrance to the theatre, to the left of it you will see a smaller door which will take you downstairs to the underground theatre.

Ample parking is available across the street at the Russel Common Municipal Lot.

If you are taking public transit, the 77 bus can be taken from Harvard or Porter Station up Massachusetts Avenue.
